Yesterday in class we looked at maps. The Mercator Projection map [second photo] is what is predominantly used to teach from in Europe. It is taken from such an angle that Europe appears to be only slightly smaller than Africa. The Peters Projection map shows countries according to their actual sizes in contrast to eachother. This map shows Europe to be at least 18 times smaller than Africa.

Until yesterday I had no idea of the actual proportions of countries. I’d only ever seen the Mercator Projection map. I can’t get over how arrogant it is that we fashioned our maps in such a way that we appear at the centre of the map, and ridiculously larger than we actually are. Pfft. I vote Peters Projection.
